Each year, Freemasons across the country pause to mark an important moment in our shared history, the founding of The Grand Lodge of Antient, Free and Accepted Masons of New Zealand.
Constituted on 29 April 1890 in Christchurch, the Grand Lodge brought together lodges under a sovereign New Zealand constitution, establishing a unified and enduring foundation for Freemasonry in this country. While Freemasonry had been active in New Zealand since 1842 under other constitutions, this moment marked the beginning of a distinctly New Zealand journey.
The first Grand Master, Most Worshipful Brother Henry Thomson, set the tone for what would follow. His leadership helped shape a tradition grounded in integrity, service, and a strong sense of brotherhood, values that continue to guide us today.
From those early days, Freemasonry in New Zealand has grown into a nationwide fraternity, with lodges and members contributing to their communities and supporting one another across generations. That legacy is not just something we look back on, it is something we actively carry forward.
